The Top 13 Worst Square Game Areas

This started out as a "worst RPG areas" list, but I was drawing a blank on non-Square entities so it became a Square list. Not to dump on Square here, as they're my favorite game developer of all time (with Konami and From Software essentially tied with them, but yeah). These are worst areas, so not limited to dungeons. Can also be overworld zones, provinces, etc. Because I'm limited to Squaresoft, the whole list won't be dominated by Phantasy Star 2 dungeons. Also, this list won out over the competition, "Top 10 Thiccest Dragon Quest Maous" so there we go.

Previously posted December 2024 as a top 11, now reposted with two new entries (the top two)

The Top 17 Bosses That Were Tougher Than The Final Boss

Time for another list. This features a lot of RPGs. Only main story, required bosses count. No uberbosses (Ruby Weapon, FFVII), postgame bosses (Nemesis, FFX), or optional fights (Warmech, FF1) and that also includes DLC bosses for newer things. The only criteria for this list is that it's a main story boss in the main game that exceeds the final boss in difficulty, or at least causes more grief for the player than the last boss. Also, one boss per game.

Previously posted January 2020 as a list of 12, now with five new additions

Ranking all 160 Super NES Games I've Finished

In celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States, it seemed like a fitting time for a GIANT LIST.

This will be the last of these wacky, overlong, Jason Graves style lists. I was going to try to do N64 as well, but the earlier lists didn't get enough views/comments to justify the work. SNES I was doing regardless just for the fun of it. The SNES is what I consider the last true "classical era" system, the height of 2D's artistic development before 3D came rolling in looking terrible and dominating everything. It took until 2020 with Demon's Souls on the PS5 for me to finally feel like 3D had reached the level of artistic merit that 2D had by 1996.

Way more games on this list, so I'm going to be keeping the blurbs for each game very short, in the interest of getting through all 160 (Jesus...) in a timely manner.

Don't take the placement TOO seriously on here. Any given group of ten could basically all be in a statistical tie with each other. Ranking these based on how well they hold up now.

My Top Twenty Tedious Boss Fights

Today I'm looking at a bunch of tedious boss fights. These are fights that gave me varying degrees of grief, not necessarily because of the difficulty, but because of their tedious elements. You know the type of fight, the kind you want to skip every time you replay a game.

Note: Originally posted in 2024, this was a top ten of mostly RPGs. I was doing a new list with non-RPGs and then decided to just combine it with the old one to make a Top 20. So about half of this is new. New content is in BOLD.

A Controversial Ranking of the Nine Quentin Tarantino Movies

Just what it sounds like, ranking the works of Tarantino. Him keeping count of his movies kind of elevates all of them, like numbering WrestleManias. Looking forward to the tenth and final one, Kill Beatrix or whatever it ends up being called. Actually, "Kill The Bride" has a clever ring to it from a marketing perspective.

In b4 everyone finds out this weirdo spent a bunch of time on an island

Ranking Highlander Season 1

Since Season 5 is shorter than it should be, and I, you know, want to delay the last episode because, you know, S5's lifespan gets cut short in such a thoughtless way by, you know, giving it 18 episodes...... it seems like a good time to do a long-overdue episode ranking. Also, a note on Season 1's DVDs: The Watcher Chronicles spoil WAY too much. First-time series viewers would do well to stay FAR away from those. They get a lot better at only covering up to the current episode later; not sure when, though. Season 3, I think.

I'll be throwing some ratings at the end of the entries, as well, but don't put too much stock into this. While the rankings are well thought-out, the number ratings are off the top of my head, and graded on the curve of this show specifically. So a 1 isn't the worst thing ever made or anything like that. 1 is the worst tier of episodes this show has and 10 is the top tier of episodes this show has, the rarified air of the top ten or so best of the best episodes.

Ranking all 80 NES Games I've Finished

Just a list, like the Sega and Game Boy lists I already did. Keeping the entries short and simple for this one.

Ranking All Six April Fool's Posts

I didn't have any new ideas this year, so I'm just going to do a ranking list for the other ones. People love rankings and top lists.

The Best And Worst Thing In Each Yakuza Game

This will include the Yakuza games that I've played (which is all of them, but not the original versions of some of them from 20 years ago, just the most current and modern versions of each).

Ranking all 60 of the Game Boy Games I Finished

Another Jason Graves style collection of blurbs. I previously did a Game Boy top ten list, and this obviously replaces that. The top ten are more or less the same across both, with a couple things moved around a bit. It's actually the same post, just edited to add the rest of them.

Not including Game Boy Color, as I'm one of the people who consider it a separate system. Here we go.

Ranking all 35 of the Sega Genesis/Game Gear/Sega CD/32X/Master System Games I've Finished

While the system came out exactly a decade earlier, it wasn't until Summer 1999 when I finally went "GIVE ME GENESIS" and picked up the system for $20 in a retro game store. Along with several games at $10 each that, by then, were generally regarded as the best the system had. There's something to be said for getting into something well after the fact. Like a TV series that ended and has a finished story to watch, or a game system where you can instantly check out all of the system's high points without waiting or wondering.

In any case, time for something a little different. I've got no real interest in doing any lists for modern systems (2001+) but I love the idea of ranking retro games, so I'll probably do a couple big Jason Graves style retro lists like this in the future. Going big here with a longer list, but expect short not-detailed entries (a bit like the RPG lists, but moreso). This is more about the ranking element than about the retrospective element, which I save for the 1000 List.

Ranking all of Samus' Suits

Some of Samus' suits are remarkably well-designed and fun to look at, with colors and aesthetics that drip off the screen. Just absolutely sumptuous design on some of these, and it's probably a part of why the series has been successful over the years.

The ranking will be based mostly on the look and art design of each suit, with maybe 20% consideration given to their ingame abilities. It isn't about which is more powerful than which (something largely impossible to determine from game to game, given the mostly-shared ability pool). It's more about which ones are the most appealing to look at in action.

The Best And Worst Thing In Each Metroid Game

The Best and Worst of a series is a concept that I'm interested in doing a bit more with. I already did a Best and Worst for both the Mario series and the Soulsborne series; in the future I'll probably do several more of these. Each of the other game series' I'd like to do is missing a game or two that I need to play before I can comprehensively finish their lists, though. Now that Metroid's got its latest game I can finish this list.

Doing something a little different here and having a post with zero further images in it. More of an article. Like a regular website, only without the 14 ads obscuring the actual content, or flat text that could have been written by an AI. I've played and finished every game in this series / on this list, some many times over. Narrowing down the best and worst thing about each one was a lot more difficult than one would expect. Let's go.

Ranking the Eight Igavania-Style Metroidvania Castlevanias

These games came out swinging right out of the gate, with Symphony of the Night setting an extremely high bar that the rest of the 2D 'Vanias worked hard to try and top. Did any of them succeed?

The Top Ten Most Difficult Battles In Final Fantasy Tactics

Now that Final Fantasy Tactics is out again, I'd like to rank some of the more difficult battles. Which ones are the biggest roadblocks - and which ones stand the test of time in difficulty?

The 7th Saga: Ranking the Apprentices

Ranking the seven playable characters to figure out who the best is, both as main character and partner character. Going to be reposting some old 7th Saga posts with edits/fixes, along with two entirely new posts on the game (this and a Lux Solo Game). While the game, and the characters, are all rough around the edges, I've always found this lineup really compelling for some reason. I've finished the game with all of them in my main duo at one time or another, so let's get to it.

Ranking the Elden Ring Legacy Dungeons From Worst To Best

Time for the Legacy Dungeons, which had to be their own list since they (and the criteria for judging them) are so much different from the open world areas. Smaller dungeons (catacombs, caves, etc) of the more cut+paste variety aren't going to be on here, nor will the smaller copied-over DLC dungeons like the forges and the prisons. Any dungeon that's large enough to have more than one grace point probably qualifies to be on here.

I'll be ranking them using the criteria of how atmospheric they are, how much fun they are, how unique they are, and how good the level design is. Level design is one area where Fromsoft excels, so nothing on this list is "bad" in that sense.

Ranking the Elden Ring Overworld Areas From Worst To Best

Contrary to the name, this list will include underworld areas if they're not dungeons. "Overworld" in this case basically means non-dungeon areas. The major legacy dungeons will get a separate list (hell if I try to rank all the catacombs and caves and whatnot).

I'll be ranking the overworld zones using the criteria of how atmospheric they are, how much fun they are, how much there is to do (i.e. how much they maximize their space), and how much I liked the overall layout.

The Best and Worst Thing In Each Soulsborne Game

Been wanting to do a list like this for a while. What we have here are seven of the best games of all time (plus a remake, a DLC, and a spinoff). Having played all of them now, I might be able to zero in on the best and worst aspects of each game with some degree of accuracy. Let's go.

Ranking the Post-Millennium RPGs I Finished

This seemed like a good way to wrap up this month of lists. Listlemania, if you will. It's the sequel to my ranking of pre-millennium RPGs, which is like a whole different world (mostly the 2D world versus the 3D world, mostly). We're picking up with 2001 onward here. If you missed the first list, it's HERE. Same general format, except it'll be over 23 and a half years instead of the 15ish that the first one covered. I don't want to take too much away from the 1000 List, which is still in-progress, so I'm not going to go too deep on most of these or include any fun stuff like "Toughest Part". We'll get some music interludes, though, when the aural pleasure of a game is just too good.
