The final game in this series, this one is a step back in a lot of ways. Ultimate MVC3 is the way to go if you want a modern one, and MVC2 is the way to go for the retro series.
This one reminds me of Mario Kart World taking a step back in most ways from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (another "Ultimate" version, too). That game changed too much for its own good, like adding highways leading up to the actual courses. Well, this game also changes too much for its own good, like going back to two-character teams despite trios working so well.
Presumably this game will involve the Infinity Stones, given the name and the fact that it came out during the leadup to the Thanos movies.
The main menu prominently features Ryu, Captain Marvel, and Captain Marvel's Torso. She never skips pilates class.
Finally, no more shadows over the characters before they're selected. There are a few downsides though:
-Significantly fewer characters (30 vs 48) than the previous game
-The appealing animated/cartoon aesthetic of the early games in the series is entirely gone by now, replaced by Street Fighter 5 style realistic-look where everyone looks like a clay statue.
-A bunch of characters are locked behind DLC, and the prices are WACK - $7 per character?
-Half the characters I actually want to play as, like Winter Soldier and Sigma, are DLC.
-Did they really have to display the DLC characters on the character select like this to dangle them over you? Some of the later MKs do this too.
-F this game, already, they done F'd it up!
This is who I'd play the game with if it wasn't locked. I'm guessing he's pretty awesome to be able to play as in a fighting game, but I'll never know, on general principle.
"Seven dolla, Soldier boy! Seven dolla!" -Capcom
If that wasn't bad enough, I'd love to play as Black Widow. She's FINALLY playable in this series, and...
...locked. Couldn't they make some of the legacy characters the locked ones, and not the brand new characters that are just now seeing a day in the sun? Or better yet, don't lock character choices behind a paywall to begin with! If they were added later, then have it all be part of an "ultimate pack" or something where you buy a reasonably-priced expansion and get all of them.
Right now it's $42 to get six characters. Might as well just have a special edition of the game at that point.
The locked characters really sour the game. You can get this game for like $10 these days so $7 for one character is even more ridiculous.
Yanno, this post is getting more depressing than the movie Logan. I need to lighten things up a bit. Know who they should add to this character select? Sean Connery.
"It is I, Tits McGee! The lascht schnowman!"
Anyway, you choose an Infinity Stone after picking characters, and that's the one you can activate during fights. This gives your characters a buff of some sort, or debuffs the other guys. I just go with the Power Stone and don't ask questions.
Ryu's shoryuken looks pretty nice at this point. Wondering if this is what it looked like in the Street Fighter game of the time, SF5.
Hurricane Kick Super. They made super moves really easy to do in these late-series games. Usually it's just a matter of tapping L2+R2.
It's weird to go back to two-on-two fights after getting used to trios. Spencer looks way too much like Winter Soldier.
The most important thing about MVC Infinite is that Morrigan's pose is still the same as the last few games in the series.
Most of the animations seem to be almost 1:1 with the previous game, only the art style is changed. Morrigan still floats the same way, everyone still has the same punches and kicks.
Switching characters regularly mid-fight is encouraged, and every switch is accompanied by this flash of light.
Captain Marvel over here threatening Morrigan in the upcoming 1st Annual Best Hips Contest.
Superman Punch, from what is essentially Marvel's version of Superman.
Now it's time for the THUNDER OF MJOLLNIR.
Behold! The THUNDER OF MJOLLNIR.
In case the THUNDER OF MJOLLNIR wasn't manly enough for one game, now we've got Ghost Rider BURNING RUBBER as he plows into Morrigan.
Now that all the women reading this are ovulating, time to dry everyone out with my once-daily complete tangent about something else:
This is one of the dumber things I've ever seen, and I get people complaining about it. They added a bunch of godmode settings to the FFVII remakes. On one hand I guess this is alright for people who just want to get all the story before the third game (though why not just watch the cutscenes on Youtube at that point?)
On the other hand, it really cheapens the games (and their platinums) to have all kinds of godmode available. Hopefully they don't launch the third one with this stuff. People like me will go ahead and use it just to see what happens in the story, and ruin the game for ourselves in the process. Why bother going back and spending 50 hours playing through normally?
Persona 5 Royal kinda does the same thing by adding DLC Personas that are completely overpowered. I just equip the one with innate "full MP restore after fights" and a big nuke, and just drop everything with that. Game is zero threat at all at any point. I could just...not use that and spend a lot more time / energy on it but why? They give me the option to make the game easier so I use it. In the process it just makes all the other Personas obsolete and hurts the game.

FuzzyfingerGaming really sum it up. BTW, FuzzyfingerGaming is basically a hobbit. He's adorable!
Well, they already totally botched the first two games by having the last 5% or so of both games be a complete nonsensical multiversal mess. Square-Enix did a fantastic job with those remakes but the showrunners couldn't get out of their own way with shoehorning in a bunch of bullshit at the end. Why not break Part 3 with godmode out of the gate?
I should cover FFVII Rebirth already. Probably right before Part 3 comes out, if the timing works out.
Next, Frank West takes photographs of Morrigan. She's totally willing to pose for them too. If Morrigan were real, she'd be posting Instagram selfies all day.
"Oh yeah, work with me!" says Frank. "You're a tigress!"
This game changed a few things but I'm really glad it kept Morrigan's victory animation intact. For 3 games in a row I've been blessed with it.
With the end of the game looming, it's time to get out the big four Avengers and give them some airtime. First up is the Marvel Team-Up (literally) of Iron Man and Hulk. Iron Man has some awesome laser attacks.
Iron Man with a SUPER CHEST LASER.
Ultron gets to be the Big Bad of this game. Well, technically Ultron-Sigma will be the Big Bad, more on that in a minute.
Ultron with some sick beams!
"LET'S SEE YOU DAAAANCE SUCKA YOU GOT NOTHIN' ON ME!"
Not that keen on Hulk's look in this one, considering how appealing he was in the old games with cartoon visuals. Now he's just another overmuscled clay SF5 character. Regardless, the final boss is Ultron Sigma, a fusion of the two villains. Basically Ultron just kinda annihilated Sigma and then absorbed him, so really it's Ultron with more powers. Even Thanos fears this version of Ultron. Also, way to throw Sigma under the bus by not having it just be a fusion.
For this one I'm bringing out Thor and Captain America. I definitely should have played as Thor more than I did in this series. His moves have electricity around them and generally look pretty rad.
"Thunderstruck" plays as I bring out the THUNDER OF MJOLLNIR.
He still has his double-barrel lasers, only they're way more awesome-looking than regular Ultron's.
The Sigma side isn't to be outdone: He's got an energy sword.
He dashes around with it like in Mega Man X, then...
...SWINGS.
Captain America blocks the lasers! It is finally his time, he's going to finish this series out.
Ultron-Sigma becomes Ultron Omega. This is the REAL final battle.
This looks like some abomination from a later X series game, like Mega Man X5 or something.
Captain America celebrates America's 250th year by SPAMMING SUPERS.
Ultron Omega fires back with all kinds of beams.
They didn't really throw Sigma under the bus after all. Him being a giant head here is awesome, and way more attention than the X series has gotten in a long time.
Cap with a flying kick! There's no neussen to attack so I go for the nose.
Enough spamming of supers brings him down. That was for AMERICA.
That's it for Arcade Mode. No character specific endings, wow. It just shows their pictures and that's it.
There's also a Story Mode that also culminates with a fight against Ultron Omega, only with more fights and a LOT more story first. Unfortunately I couldn't get any pictures of Story Mode because in their infinite wisdom, Capcom decided to block any and all recording of Story Mode. It was a fun movie (with battles) and had a lot of Mega Man. Tony Stark builds him a Super Mega Buster. Just a fun time.
So, final thoughts on this game? Can probably tell from the post, but it was pretty Mid. It is, much like Morrigan, perfectly serviceable. However that's about all it is. It felt like a step down in a lot of ways from the previous entries. Like I said before, MVC2 is the high point of this series and the thing worth playing if you want the classic style, while Ultimate MVC3 is a solid evolution if you like the more modern style. This game here is just an unnecessary follow-up. Since the previous game did almost everything better, the only thing this game is particularly good for is the Story Mode, which none of the others had. Long overdue, to say the least. However, Story Mode is also something that's only worth playing once, and after that two-hour experience is over you're left with a Mid game that took steps backwards.
As a reminder, the PS4 version of Ultimate MVC3 is currently $5 on the Playstation Store for a little longer. That's the one to get. This one? Recommendation to avoid.
