Final Fantasy Legend 3, Finale - Salida Del Sol

The SaGa Trilogy roars to an end. The last stop in Pureland is the Mountaintop of the Giants ice land in the north, which consists of a few small dungeons and one big dungeon. The small ones are generally unnecessary and won't have anything you need at this point, outside of this eastern dungeon, which contains the last upgrades for the Talon. This will let me get to Mt. Goht, home of Xagor.

Oh yeah, I mentioned Pureland's map looking like the Elden Ring world map. Here it is:

Yarp, there it is.

Borgin is found here in the Eastern dungeon, that guy who has been mentioned all game.

The Eastern dungeon is fairly short, and culminates with a fight against Agron. This thing is some sort of ghost. Not sure if it's one of "the masters". At this point it's hard to say which bad guys even are "the masters" to begin with.

Agron starts the fight by defending. As well he should, because...

...our heroes absolutely pummel the hell out of this guy with Mystic Swords. It's a full-on slaughter.

Next stop, Mt. Goht. It's a short but confusing dungeon, where the dungeon layout gets changed midway through. Have one last look at Talon, what a majestic aircraft. It kinda looks like a B2 bomber. We should just launch a tactical strike on Mt. Goht and go home.

At the top is Fire Giant Xagor's Castle. This is it. As a reminder, endgame stats:

I've got everyone in their "ultimate forms" which means...

Robot - Venus
Beast - Anubis
Cyborg - Removed

Since Beasts automatically change forms every time they level, this just means the Beasts need to be an even-numbered level. Any time from 30 onward, they'll be Anubis at even levels and a different less-powerful form at odd levels. So I just tried to keep them on even levels, especially for the final battle. Venus and Removed were just a matter of having them grab robot/cyborg parts respectively once they were over level 31 or so.

Anubises show up as regular enemies at the end here. That sprite is definitely my favorite enemy sprite in this game.

The best accessory, which protects against status effects. This is going to be KEY for the next boss fight.

Here's Balor, the second-in-command of Xagor's forces, the penultimate boss, and probably the toughest fight in the game.

He reveals that Xagor is at the top of the castle taking control of Sol's body. Soon, Xagor and Sol will be the same guy, and the most powerful warrior in the world will be the vessel for a diabolical evil spirit.

Balor is a very Super Ghouls and Ghosts looking enemy, and is based on the "Balor" demon of mythology.

Why is this the toughest fight in the game, you ask?

Because he goes absolutely crazy with AOE status effects to a level I haven't seen since the King Hydra in the DQ3 remake. Basically just renders the party completely helpless, outside of whoever has a Ribbon on. There are other Ribbons that can be obtained elsewhere (I think the armor guy on the Talon can forge them with stones, too) so in theory you could have a few of them at this point. I wish I'd at least gotten a couple from the Talon merchant, since I didn't use those stones for anything else.

All of that said, one character is all I need to whoop his ass, as I equip Gloria with Nukes and just DEMOLISH him with them. Once the other characters woke up, they contributed their own slashing-fest with Mystic Swords.

They've only been reminding me of this for the entire game. This Sol guy better be worth it!

Here he is. The game actually pulled me into the final battle prematurely, and I didn't have a chance to save first. Turns out as soon as you walk anywhere near this guy, your characters go on autopilot and march up to him to start the last fight. So I had to win, lest I repeat that entire dungeon again.

Sol himself doesn't fight back. He only really takes damage from Mystic weapons.

They unleash a ton of damage, but I'm a bit disappointed that this isn't a real fight. Battling a semi-possessed Sol could have been a hell of a battle.

OUTSTANDING final boss theme kicks in as Xagor appears. And goddamn, Xagor is one ugly m******f******er.

AOE heals pretty much nullify most of his offense, and I can alternate the Beasts between doing that and attacking. Meanwhile Arthur and Sharon attack with the best swords. It's a simple fight, like most of the endgame. This game is more complex than Final Fantasy Mystic Quest but not by much.

What's that buzzing sound? COULD IT BE? Oh My! Is LUX back from FFL2 to help our heroes??

Nope, it's the Talon, doing a run-in to attack with DEATH RAYS!

Eventually, Xagor gets a bunch of mouths (WTF) and starts unleashing Flares against the party for 600ish damage, which necessitates having people on full-time CureB usage. The big threat here is that Xagor's agility seems to be all over the place, and sometimes he'll go first on a turn while other times he might go last, or in the middle of a turn. If he happens to use Flare back-to-back before anyone has a chance to heal, that's a full wipe most likely. Yes, it's lame as hell. However, if one of the two characters with LifeB survives, they can just bring everyone back on the next round (unless he goes first and finishes them off lol).

That's it, fight over. This and Balor were easily the game's two hardest fights, though for different reasons. Balor had the status effect AOEs that could put you in status effect hell, while Xagor is significantly more powerful with his AOEs and whatnot. Balor can be gimped with Ribbons, while both of them can be gimped with volleying Nukes.

Which reminds me...I completely forgot to use my remaining Nukes on the final battle. Whoops.

Sol fades away, but not before stopping the Water Entity from taking over.

Alaikum salam, Sol.

At the end, Arthur goes back in time and meets his dad, who looks just like him, and decides on the spot that he'll name his kid Arthur. Maybe he should consult his wife first? What if she wants to name him after Orlando Bloom or something?

That's it for this game. So, final thoughts on this game?

It's good, better than I gave it credit for back in the day. Better than FFL2? No, but it isn't as far off as I thought. Might even be a fairly close contest. Weapons not breaking anymore is a nice step up, and the game is certainly less rough around the edges. I needed very little strategy in the lategame though, and it turned into a "slash away with Mystic Swords" fest. Other than that...

Wait! There's more? It seems there's a new holodeck, and it's harder than the first one!

What's in this one, you ask?

"Come to bed, Arthur." "We're so lonely!"

::Arthur forgets about Sharon and runs into the holodeck at top speed::

Anyway, the rest of my final thoughts on this game... uh

Blorg, blerg de bloog.

idk

bye
