FF1 and FF3 heavily limit your magic usage and FF2 makes you cast a spell like 1600 times to max it out so you generally go through that game without many strong spells. So DQ's magic is better for the first 3 games, and after that FF definitely takes over. Exploiting elemental weaknesses in FF4 with (Element)3 spells in FF4's endgame is the first time I remember magic being super-dominant in either series."

Even in the first three games, Dragon Warrior still relied on Physical Attacks more than Magic. It's a very obscure (and bad) Super NES RPG, I'll say that much."

You are talking about the old Tecmo RPG, Secret Of The Stars. I got to confess, that game was a guilty pleasure for me. But, when compared to the best that a Final Fantasy or Might & Magic has to offer, it doesn't blow me away. Tecmo should remake Secret Of The Stars. Hopefully, they can fix the tons of problems that plagued the original.

I love Dragon Warrior 3! Hands down, the high point of the series in my opinion. However, I'm not surprised one bit at the Dragon Warrior series being a long term flop outside of Japan from day ONE. Even with the numbers 8 and 9 did, they are still not that great when adjusted by how many gamers there were compared to the NES era.

And aside from a couple of others (I like 4 and 9) as well, I find Dragon Warrior to be the Joe Namath of video games. The most OVERRATED IP in gaming.

One last thing, since you've shown who you named your cast after, I'll show you my Dragon Warrior 3 team.

Jake "Razor" Clawson as Loto/Erdrick
Chance "T-Bone" Furlong (Soldier/Warrior)
Chow-Baby (Pilgrim/Cleric, Sage later on)
Meow-Baby (Wizard/Mage)
Top Cat (Merchant/Dealer)

Jake and Chance are from The Swat Kats, while Chow and Meow are from Karate Kat. I'm sure you know who Top Cat is as he fits the role of a greedy merchant pretty well.

Thanks again for the review.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8346508933381337699.post-48422058655342078942019-03-02T04:49:22.628-05:002019-03-02T04:49:22.628-05:00"You'll almost never use his spells to at..."You'll almost never use his spells to attack though, unless you're blind or need to hit a group with Firebal since you're sans-Wizard."

I always found the Dragon Warrior series to be more reliable on Physical Attacks (usually), while the Final Fantasy series relies more on Magic (most of the time).

Wouldn't you agree?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8346508933381337699.post-89424356134547399472015-03-22T12:01:17.133-04:002015-03-22T12:01:17.133-04:00I really like this series of image mails. And I say this despite already having read many DQ3 image mail series!
Ahh Santorum, been a while since I saw him.
Are your SOTS posts on the site? This'd be a great place to link to them.
Nice DQ3/FF4 joke mashup..FF4 sadly makes more sense to me now after what the US did long after it came out. If only W had played it!!
Could the Staff of Change get you into the elf village?
What is going on with this fortune teller and her dad?! So feels like something naughty went untranslated.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8346508933381337699.post-27171345544781710812015-03-13T17:22:03.459-04:002015-03-13T17:22:03.459-04:00I would have gone for the princess. If a woman off...I would have gone for the princess. If a woman offers you a lifetime supply of herself, that's a pretty big deal.

As for the hero's battlemageyness, I've found that it's hard to know whether to use regular attacks or Zap a lot of the time. Zap seems to do more damage, but once I lower the defenses of an enemy...

I've got enough for a second post. Not sure if I'll do that next or put up TMNT. I finally want to do more Highlander too, so that might be the next thing I put up if I get around to watching The Samurai this weekend.Jerichohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14031388156675516231noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8346508933381337699.post-10096816784811133562015-03-13T15:27:48.471-04:002015-03-13T15:27:48.471-04:00Back in the day you had a complete inventory list ...Back in the day you had a complete inventory list that came in the box and players would use that to determine if equipment was an upgrade or a downgrade. Eventually you memorized it. While fun, there's no question that adding a way to easily tell within the game is an improvement.

Having swords AND spells is pretty tough to balance I guess. The Hero is deliberately a little OP. You'll almost never use his spells to attack though, unless you're blind or need to hit a group with Firebal since you're sans-Wizard.

Good call, your Fighter is very optimized at this point of the game.

The rejection of the Elf Town is rough because the only other town in the area is asleep. So you've got this whole region of the map with two towns and yet no inn or shops.

"Come and live with your princess forever?!"
