#680 Persona 5 (Playstation 4) – Spring 2017
One of the early games I played on an LG OLED, and a very worthy game for that. With high contrast and lots of black and red, the color palette of this game was perfect for seeing what the new TV could do. I got more into this one than the others, but it was just a one-and-done playthrough while the others were multiple time events.
Favorite Palace: Museum. This magical-ish place brings back memories, as it looks like the opening night at a museum I went to around the same time in real life. They had everything set up almost like a nightclub; dark low-key lights and reverberating sound in every room. It was really something to behold, way "hipper" than one would expect a museum to be.
Another terrible port. Not sure how they got these 1 and 3 ports so wrong while putting out a really good MK2 for Game Boy. This already wasn't my favorite MK game to begin with and this is probably the worst version of it. Well, it cost me nothing except a half hour of my life and it got me the 681st number on this list. This is definitely one of those "question why I'm bothering with all this" games though.
Favorite Character: None, this game is terrible all around. That picture of Two Sonyas up there will produce more endorphins in one's brain than playing the game will.
#682 Super Smash Bros (3DS) – Spring 2017
Had a few more game store games to finish off, like the Smash series. All I really recall about this one is that the Wii Fit Trainer is a terrific character. No gimmicks, just a fit woman in a tank top and yoga pants.
Favorite Character: Wii Fit Trainer
#683 Super Smash Bros (Wii U) – Spring 2017
I can't tell the difference between this and the previous game in retrospect. I know one of them had an insanely long story mode with like a hundred battles in it. Might have been the final Ultimate one on the Switch, or it might have been this one.
Favorite Character: Wii Fit Trainer
#684 Dragon Quest Heroes 2 (Playstation 4) – Spring 2017
Solid musuo game. In retrospect I can't really tell the difference between this and the first one. Yeah, that issue again. It's funny how I have such vivid memories of my first 100 games and then the memories just get sparser and sparser with each hundred after that. By this point it's tough to give more than a quick blurb to most of these. Where's Heroes 3?
Favorite Character: Desdemona. She's a new unique character made for this game. Series? Not sure if she was in the first one. She's a redhead with chain mail and an axe, and you don't get many female characters in the berserker archetype so I had to check this one out.
Short, nice, forgettable game. I can barely remember this one at all, except that I was hoping for it to be another 2D Zelda and it was over too quick for anything like that.
Another short one, you play as a cute girl with superpowers and fly around a city. There was a nice sense of freedom in this one and the views were great. A pure fun game the same way something like Saints Row 4 is.
#687 Tekken (Playstation) – Spring 2017
At this point I went on a quest to get a hold of and finish all the Tekkens. Starting with the first, which was very antiquated at this point. Tekken 2 is probably still my favorite. This series is 3D fighter royalty, so you can really see how they evolved over time by playing the whole series. I definitely prefer 2D fighters, but I'm alright with this series in particular for 3D.
Post HERE.
After replaying the two I had already played, I went on to the three I hadn't. Don't remember much about them though.
Again, don't remember much.
This is, like Pokemon and RE, another series that went through a bit of a lull / lack of innovation for a while before kicking back in with the 7th installment. Yeah, I liked the 7th and 8th a lot, much later on. These few? Don't recall much. They're Tekken, they're 3D fighters, everything feels kinda weightless but in a stylish way.
#691 Saints Row 4 (Playstation 4) – Spring 2017
This is when I discovered a delightful series that had totally flown under my radar. the Saints Row games are WILD. Well, the first is a pretty mundane GTA3 clone, and I didn't get too far in that one. The other three (of the original series) get progressively more insane. I started with the wackiest one, the last one (...and it IS the last one), Saints Row 4. A game where you can fly, leap over buildings, and fight with all kinds of ludicrous weapons from nuclear rocket launchers to giant dildo-swords. This was tremendously fun.
A game that lets you terrorize Mordor as a wraith. Unfortunately it's a tiny, tiny area of Mordor, just a valley in the northwest corner. So my hopes and dreams of seeing some of greater Mordor's landmarks were quickly dashed. There's a sequel later that does a lot more with the setting.
#693 Super Mario Run (Android) – Spring 2017
A good phone game nobody played. Mario runs nonstop through the levels and you just need to do the jumps. The kind of game your girlfriend who doesn't play games would have a great time with. Maybe she would get into games if Nintendo made a damn Zelda game starring Zelda! A 3D one where she's gorgeous! As for this game...it's over too soon and only has a few levels. I spent one afternoon checking it out. It's notable for being the last game I played while running a game store.
I showed it off to an attractive Brazilian woman who came into the store specifically to chat with me rather than to get anything, and didn't even play games. As in, she literally said that. "I was walking by and saw you in here and decided to pop in". One of those rare direct-flirts that happens to men once every 8 years.
Alas, as a taken fellow, it didn't go anywhere. She finished the coffee she got next door, tried Mario Run, talked to me for a few, and said she'd come back and say hi again soon. That was my last day, unbeknownst to both of us then but knownst to me now. The most hilarious part is that I think she was the only woman to go in there solo in the entire year I ran the game store. Literally all of the rare female customers we got were there with a guy. A woman just coming to the store solo just to chat with me? Literally a one-time event.
After Super Mario Run - and the game store - ended I took a bit of a break from finishing games for a month or so before starting back up. The game store era was a lively sprint, much like this game.
Better than the first FFTA because they left out the idiotic judges and carding. Also looks a lot better. Luso is a cool main character. Seems like nobody really noticed this game, unfortunately. Maybe the first one poisoned the well by being so damn mediocre.
Toughest Part: The final boss is absurd in this one. Without farming super-weapons for my characters, the last fight took a couple of hours to bring down. Course, I could have done more to make this not the case. However, playing the game normally and not doing any optional content, the final boss is a roadblock.
I tried the first game in the series and it didn't work out. Never managed to finish it. It's stuck on the XBox and is pretty much a GTA clone. This second one is where they start getting crazy with it. Not TOO crazy mind you, but crazy enough to be fun and entertaining. Lots of explosions, leaping over traffic lights, and slowly walking away from explosions.
#696 Life is Strange (Playstation 4) – Summer 2017
More of a narrative-driven game here, this was the topic of a lot of discussion at the time so I checked it out. It's got a lot of Donnie Darko vibe. Like My Chemical Romance should be playing over a lot of it. Being a teenager is strange and confusing.
Here's where they got REALLY wild with this series. There's flight, jumping over buildings, suplexing tanks, the whole nine yards. What's crazy is that they got even wilder with the fourth game. This third one might be the best of the group, since it stays at least a little bit grounded, and feels more finished than the fourth did.
Played this during a medication withdrawal I never had to deal with before. I didn't want to waste any actual good games on it. It's the worst mainline RE and also the longest, a bad combination. Got nothing good to say about it except that I'd appreciate it more now than I did then. It goes for an Avengers style Marvel Team-Up of the series leads under one roof, where normally each game only has one or two of the RE Big Four characters. So yeah, I'd like it more now that I know all of these characters and would like to see a big mashup. Too bad it wasn't a better game. I think this mainly served to just bang out one more big adventure with the OGs before they rebooted the series a bit with the seventh one.
Mostly remember this for being high on weed the entire time, as I'd just discovered medicinal weed that week. Or at least, how much of it to take that it would actually work. The game itself was meh, nowhere near as memorable as The Stick of Truth. Just wasn't a fun time for me, this era. Here's what I wrote about the game at the time:
At the end we had to stop Mitch Conners from becoming Mayor and causing the end of the world as chaos broke out in the streets. Then your hero goes home, only to have his newly-sober parents (everyone in town is either an alcoholic or on drugs) go to their room for hanky-panky. As you're forced to listen to all the moaning, Professor Chaos appears in the background and lets your hero know that no matter what he does, at the end of the day he'll never be able to stop his dad from f*****ing his mom. It was exactly like the end of FF4 where Zeromus makes that speech about how evil will always exist.
